Solid Waste Management in the Mackenzie
On 20 May 2002, Mackenzie District Council inaugurated a completely new solid waste management system built around the concept of resource recovery.
The most expensive component of the waste disposal is the cost of cartage to Redruth landfill, Timaru and theidisposal fees charged at the gate.
The whole strategy is to reduce, as much as possible, the residual waste going to landfill.
At the moment approximately 73% of all the waste received at the Council's three Resource Recovery Parks (RRPs) is diverted from landfill.
A major component is the conversion of putrescible waste into valuable compost through the vertical composting unit (VCU) at Twizel.
Prior to this system, 100% of the Mackenzie's waste was dumped into rudimentary landfills at each town.
