Solid Waste Management: Facilities
Three Resource Recovery Parks (RRPs), one each at Twizel, Lake Tekapo and Fairlie provide the infrastructure for the Mackenzie district's solid waste system.
These parks provide the public with centres where organic, recyclable and residual waste may be dropped off.
The parks receive domestic, commercial and kerbside collected waste.
Materials from the waste stream are separated, sorted and stockpiled either for further processing or for dispatch to markets.
The Districts in-vessel composting unit JOAN (Just Organic and Natural) is located within the Twizel Resource Recovery Park to process organic waste into high quality compost which is available for sale at each RRP and Fairlie House and Garden.
Within the towns there are compartmentalised recycling bins for the disposal of the public's waste.
