Mackenzie District Council - Community Boards

Function of Community Boards

Community Board Members are advocates for their local Community. They are responsible for developing specific policies and setting the Standard of Services for the Township

Boards work with Council Managers to develop each years Budgets for Services provided to their respective townships i.e. Water Supply, Sewerage, Stormwater, Roading, Footpaths, Household Refuse Collection, Township Maintenance, Halls and Community Centres, Swimming Pools.

They also co-ordinate Community Projects and Ideas.

Structure of Community Boards

The Community Boards comprise the second tier of the Council’s Elected Representative structure. Currently, there are three Community Boards and their makeup is as follows:

  • Twizel Community Board (4 members plus 1 appointed Councillor)
  • Tekapo Community Board (4 members plus 1 appointed Councillor)
  • Fairlie Community Board (4 members and 1 appointed Councillor)

As part of the decision of the Local Government Commission, the structure of the Boards has changed so that from the October 2004 elections, each Community board now consists of four elected members and one appointed Councillor.

Objectives

  • To provide focused debate and feedback to Council on issues surrounding the three urban areas of the Mackenzie District.
  • To fulfil the statutory requirements of a Community Board:
    • to represent and act as an advocate for the interests of the community
    • to consider and report on all matters referred to it by the Council, or on any other matter of interest or concern to the Community Board
    • to maintain an overview of services provided by the Council within the community
    • to prepare an annual submission to the Council on expenditure within the community
    • to communicate with community organisations and special interest groups within the community
    • to undertake any of the responsibilities that are delegated to it by the Council

Activities

To convene, publicly advertise and hold eight meetings for each Community Board.

To hold regular liaison meetings between the Community Boards and Council.
