LAKE TEKAPO COMMUNITY CENTRE
On Tuesday night the Tekapo Community Board presented a proposal for a new community centre for Lake Tekapo to about sixty local residents.
The unique design by Louis Campbell sets the building below ground level on the northern side of Lakeside Drive. The plan makes the most of the site by taking in the impressive outlook up the lake, while protecting view opportunities from residential sites to the rear.
The concept involves a passive solar design thermal mass structure, with insulation and ground source heating to minimise on-going operational costs. It provides for a warm and inviting building which sits comfortably within the high country landscape.
The design allows flexibility and provides a wide variety of venue choices. It incorporates an entrance foyer/exhibition area, community hall and function centre, commercial kitchen, separate lounge and meeting rooms. It also includes a fitness centre and library room and large terraces overlooking the lake.
The Tekapo Community Board is seeking feedback on the proposed design. A model and plans can be viewed at the Tekapo I Site and on the Township notice board. Further details and photographs are available here .
“It is important to note that it is a concept at this point and we are keen to stimulate feedback from the community,” said Tekapo Community Board Chairman Peter Maxwell.
