This building at Burkes Pass was constructed in 1876 for a tender price of $2100 for the Mount Cook Road Board. It was taken over by the Mackenzie County Council when it came into being in 1883.

The original government building at Burkes Pass was constructed from concrete and served as the district's administrative centre from 1876 to 1891. It was first occupied by the Mount Cook Road Board (1876-1883) and later by the Mackenzie County Council (1883-1891), before the Council relocated its offices to Fairlie in 1891.
