Following the discovery of potential asbestos in contaminated play sand and subsequent recall of a variety of products, Timaru District Council are accepting affected play sand carefully wrapped at their waste transfer stations.
As Mackenzie District does not have the expertise to handle these types of products, Timaru have kindly extended this service to include residents of Mackenzie District.
The sand can be disposed of at any Timaru District Council transfer station, free of charge. DO NOT dispose of it in your household kerbside bin.
When you arrive at the transfer station, head to the kiosk and et the staff know that you are disposing of asbestos contaminated material, and they will take you through the process.
Before taking any products to the drop-off-point, ensure you place the sand in a sealed container, then double-bag it in thick plastic and wrap in multiple layers of plastic wrap, seal with tape and clearly label as ‘Asbestos-contaminated material’.
For more information, including the locations of the transfer stations, please go to: timaru.govt.nz > News > Public Notices > Disposal information on recalled magic sand product.
