Councillors and staff were deeply saddened to hear of the recent passing of Anne Munro, a leader whose dedication to the Mackenzie District will live on in our community.
Anne’s service began as a councillor in 2016 and, in 2022, she was elected Mayor. She steered Council through the early stages of the Local Water Done Well reforms and the District Plan review, always focusing on outcomes that reflected the values of our communities and the wellbeing of the land to which she was so deeply connected.
Anne’s leadership was calm, capable, and deeply community-minded. She valued collaboration, open-minded discussion, and respect in every conversation. She remained steadfastly true to her values and was never afraid to stand up for what she believed was right. Regardless of the pressures she faced, Anne consistently acknowledged the essential work of Council staff, reminding us that without their dedication there would be no water in our taps and no roads to drive on. Staff will remember her for her kindness, compassion, and empathy.
When Anne received her cancer diagnosis, she stepped aside not from duty, but to ensure stable leadership for our district during a difficult time. Even through illness, she remained connected to Council, hopeful that our community would meet its challenges with unity, openness, and compassion.
Anne loved this district—the landscapes, the people, and the spirit they share. Her legacy is a district strengthened by her leadership, a team inspired by her example, and a community united by the values she championed.
Her legacy lives on in the Mackenzie and in all of us who had the privilege to serve with her.
