In designated dog exercise areas your dog does not to be on a lead but you need to have one with you. Even when you're exercising off-leash, you must keep your dog under control at all times.
In public places your dog needs to be on a lead. If you are taking your dog out in public it’s your responsibility to clean up after it. Used litter bags can be placed in public rubbish bins, or placed into the red rubbish bin at home.

Prohibited areas
Dogs are prohibited from:
- Playground areas
- Skateparks
- Strathconan Pool, Fairlie and Twizel Community Pool
- Cemeteries
- Schools, Kindergartens and Play Centres*
- Public Halls, Community Centres or Libraries*
* Unless approval has been obtained from the Controlling Authority of that land or premise.
Leashed areas
The places in the Mackenzie District where dogs are required to controlled on a leash are:
- the Fairlie Village Centre
- the Fairlie Village Green including the area around the playground and skatepark;
- the Tekapo Village Centre and Tekapo Domain
- the Twizel Village Centre, including the Market Place Shopping Mall and Market Place car parking area;
- the peripheral area surrounding any sport field in the district for a distance of up to 10 metres
- all roads including associated pedestrian areas
The above clauses do not apply to the following:
- disability assist dogs.
- working dogs that are under effective control while that dog is being worked or while it is being taken to and from work.
